BluPlanet Recycling Inc. is a Calgary based multi-family residential recycling collection company. Since commencement of operations in June 2009, BluPlanet Recycling has grown to become the City of Calgary’s fastest growing and most viable option for multi-family recycling collection. Besides being an expanding and profitable business venture, BluPlanet Recycling strives to be a good corporate citizen by supporting local not-for-profit organizations and maintaining high standard of environmental practice in all of our operations. BluPlanet Recycling collects mixed recycling from multi-family residential units on a weekly or semi-weekly basis, for a list of materials please visit our website at www.bprecycling.ca Once materials have been collected they are transported to the Cascades MRF recycling plant in Calgary and processed for resale into the market.
BluPlanet has over 7000 units in its portfolio of clientele, or approximately 12,000 people. We are expanding rapidly and expect to be operating programs in as many as 10,000 individual multi-family residences by the end of 2011. Our long-term objective is to be Calgary’s largest provider of multi-family recycling collection and potentially even the sole provider of these services in Calgary. BluPlanet Recycling uses a unique and customizable materials collection system to contain materials at each individual site and uses a variety of collection vehicles in order to properly service each building or complex.

Strategy
BluPlanet Recycling has committed to learning about climate neutrality and strives to be a climate neutral company. Our greatest source of information on both the importance of climate neutrality and strategies for business to reduce and offset their climate impact has been the David Suzuki foundation. We use the following guides provided by this organization:

With the guidance of these publications our company has been able to develop a strategy towards achieving our goal of climate neutrality.
In the short-term BluPlanet Recycling has implemented the following strategies in our business:
- BluPlanet performs a semi-annual carbon audit (2009-2010 audit using a calculator provided by the U.S Forestry Department, 2010-2011 audit with the help of the University of California, Berkeley’s Climate Calculator for business). Once our carbon calculation is completed we purchase offsets using the www.less.ca website, which offers the opportunity to purchase carbon offsets quickly and easily online. This website was rated the highest by the David Suzuki Foundation for carbon offset purchases.
- BluPlanet Recycling has begun to purchase clean renewable energy for our office and workshop through the Ontario based company Bullfrog Power, www.bullfrogpower.com. Bullfrog Power calculates your offsets for you and you can track them monthly online.
- BluPlanet Recycling supports tree planting initiatives by using native pine or spruce seedlings as promotional giveaways at community events.
- BluPlanet Recycling has moved our premises to a location which will allow all of the owners to commute by car within 5 minutes or 10 minutes by bi-cycle.
- BluPlanet Recycling tries, where possible, to reduce its transportation impact by developing driving routes for collection vehicles which reduce time in motion and fuel consumption.
In the next year BluPlanet Recycling plans to improve our emission reduction strategy with the following initiatives and changes:
- Hire a professional climate audit firm who can help recommend strategies to reduce our climate impact and help provide more accurate carbon/climate audits.
- BluPlanet Recycling plans to find ways of reducing our transportation emissions through operational policies, vehicle modifications and by seeking fuel alternatives.
BluPlanet Recycling is committed to becoming a totally climate neutral company and operating our business in a sustainable fashion for as long as we are in operation.
