Strategy
The CKR Global group of risk mitigation companies has embraced the notion of working to reduce our carbon emissions and work towards attaining carbon neutral status by 2020 across all divisions, in all our locations around the world.
1. Measurement of Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Our first step is identifying the most appropriate and accurate process for quantifying our current greenhouse gas emissions as a baseline. From there, we are setting goals for each division, each year so as to monitor our progress, identify weaknesses and make corrections as needed in our overall strategy.
2. Mitigation Programs
As a part of our strategy, we have identified a number of ways we can reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, including:
- Increase energy efficiency
- Maximize purchasing of green energy
- Purchase additional alternative fuel vehicles
- Promote staff use of car-pools, use of public transit and alternative fuel vehicles as personal vehicles
- Formalize opportunities for staff to telecommute
- Increase use of teleconferencing to reduce car and air travel to company meetings
- Enhance the use of electronic reporting and filing of internal and client documents to reduce use of paper
- Recycle waste materials (plastics, paper, metals) in all offices
- Identify approved local disposal methods for obsolete electrical products
- Install power saving lights in all offices
- Turn off all lights and computers at end of each office day
- Donate old/used office furniture to local NGO’s
Divisions that rely heavily on vehicles for operational duties have already taken a number of steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, including:
- Purchasing our first hybrid energy vehicle, with plans to purchase others.
- Leasing only flex or dual fuel vehicles for remote site client projects
- Checking and performing routine maintenance on company vehicles to maximize performance.
- Planning prior to commutes to and/or from work and client meetings/assignments in order to avoid traffic congestion is encouraged to enables us to further reduce gas emissions, while maximizing fuel efficiency. We also encourage flexible schedules and appropriate telecommuting to achieve this goal.
- Instituted a “no idling” rule for work related driving.
- Avoiding heavy traffic zones and times which also enable us to drive smoothly and safely, prolonging the life of our vehicles and limiting fuel consumption.
- Driving defensively and cautiously, while staying at the posted speed limits, avoiding high, fuel-depleting speeds.
- Disengaging vehicles when not in use, so as not to burn costly fuel and emit wasteful gasses into the environment.
- Offering clients the opportunity pay a surcharge so that an alternate fuel vehicle is used when work is performed by us for them.
CKR Global is continuing to consult with our clients on additional measures we can undertake to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, CKR Global is actively encouraging its clients and partners to work on reducing their greenhouse gas emissions.
