The object of this voluntary climate project is to enable companies to neutralize their CO2 emissions incurred by the use of their websites. The CO2 reductions are done by the building of new renewable energy sources, for instance new windmills. CO2 Neutral Website is also purchasing and deleting CO2 quotas (EUA, which is the EU's approved standard). These quotas are cleared at state authorities in EU and the result is that they are forcing bigger companies to reduce their emissions. All purchases and deletions of quotas are reviewed independently by Deloitte. They test that the purchased amount of quotas corresponds to the total CO2 emission appearing from the list of participants.
Strategy
The target of the initiative is to increase the recognition of CO2 reductions being important. The more companies putting the icon ”CO2 neutral website” on their website, the better. Because it markets that CO2 neutrality is a good cause. Concurrently, the initiative creates a good and direct result on its own by removing CO2 emission from the Internet.
CO2 Neutral Website makes the requirement of the participants that they are to neutralize the use of their website 100 per cent. They do not believe in ”semi-green” solutions in this area as they must be able to communicate clearly to obtain reliable recognition. Together with more than 1 400 companies globally, they have neutralized the CO2 emission from the use of their website. The result is green, climate-friendly surfing for the visitors.
