Strategy
ClearSky is in a unique position to engage in a climate-neutral strategy. It possesses the internal capacity and experience to conduct comprehensive Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Assessments. It also directly owns a portfolio of high-quality VERs (carbon credits in the voluntary carbon market) that can be put to use to mitigate its corporate carbon footprint. Its VERs meet some of the strongest standards available in the voluntary carbon market. Finally, ClearSky also strives to enact climate-friendly business practices wherever possible.
ClearSky is committed to being a climate-neutral business, and its climate action plan includes:
- auditing its GHG emissions;
- setting an aggressive emissions reduction target of 5 per cent below previous years levels (pro-rated on a per-employee basis);
- setting an immediate goal of becoming climate neutral each year, by retiring an equivalent number of certified carbon offsets from its portfolio;
- working with the owners of its office building to measure and offset GHG emissions from the entire building each year;
- offering an employee benefit of a reduced price carbon offset for employees to use for their personal carbon footprints;
- investigating ways to reduce electricity consumption; and
- enacting a corporate incentives program for employees to commute by biking, bussing, walking, or car pooling.
ClearSky uses the most up-to-date information and publicly-vetted calculation protocols, and it aims to keep its assessment process transparent by providing all references and calculations to the public. ClearSky is currently auditing its internal GHG emissions from the following activities:
- electricity and natural gas use at the headquarters office;
- electricity and natural gas use at the offices of employees working remotely;
- company car travel;
- company air travel;
- employee hotel stays;
- employee commuting;
- office paper use;
- commercial printing; and
- advertising production.
As a public demonstration of its sustainability activities, ClearSky will also post its GHG Assessment and Climate Action Plan on its website. Beyond measuring its carbon footprint and carrying out its climate action plan, ClearSky employs a number of business practices that currently reduce its carbon footprint as well as its operating costs:
- flexible schedule work program for employees;
- remote work program for employees;
- frequent webinars and conference calls to avoid company travel; and
- eco-friendly purchasing policy for all company-branded materials.
By implementing these practices and continually searching for new ways to reduce its operational carbon footprint, ClearSky hopes to become a role model for small businesses in the new green economy. It also wants to be a resource for information and experience for like-minded companies seeking to improve their own performance.
