About
Cloroetil is a private company that delivers high quality and environmental friendly solvents. Their values drives them, their collaborators and suppliers to the continuous search for the sustainability. Their main product "ethyl acetate" has a very differentiated production system that uses renewable resources, renewable energy in a high efficient and with minimum environmental impact.
Strategy
Cloroetil was founded in 1982 and has a particular manufacturing process to deliver solvents, mainly Ethyl Acetate. While most competitors uses methanol as raw material, which a fossil input, Cloroetil uses ethanol, from sugar cane. Cloroetil belief is that a chemical industry, to be sustainable, has to be efficient from the inputs, through the processes to the output.
Cloroetil seek for continual efficiency gives a lot of value to the purges that can be efficiently transformed in by products. The Ethyl Acetate production process generates hydrogen, alcohol purge and waste water and uses as raw material sugar cane, ethyl, alcohol and bagasse to produce oxygenated solvents.
Cloroetil particular production is very efficient, through its supplies that come from renewable sources and renewable energy and the creative use of the purges to transform what is considered residue by other sector companies into a high value added by product. Cloroetil deserves to be highlighted as an outstanding sustainability environmental driven business in the world. By the time Cloroetil started its plant operations, hydro carbonated solvents were the most usual solvent market supply, no official data was found from early 80’s.
Today, almost 30 years later, oxygenated solvents, such as Ethyl Acetate, represent almost 70 per cent of world solvent consumption/production against 25 per cent of hydro carbonated and 5 per cent of chlorate. Oxygenated solvent market is much consolidated and its growth worldwide is 4 per cent yearly, while the whole solvent market growing rate is 2.3 per cent. A great push for the oxygenated is because oxygenated solvent produces ten times less ozone than others.
Using raw material from non health aggressive materials and from renewable resources was the base for Cloroetil production philosophy on its beginning. Recently, in 2009, Cloroetil crossed the input to the process aspects and took action on the thermal energy structure. An oil boiler was replaced to use biomass and avoid GHG emissions and improve environmental efficiency.
Currently Cloroetil is developing its emission inventory to clearly understand the benefit of having a clean production as well as the impact over GHG emissions and its chain. Next step is to analyze upstream and integrate actions with players that seek to have less impact packages to deliver products with low emissions impact. Whether it is economically feasible, Cloroetil will proceed to neutralize its product emissions. Cloroetil clearly motivates its collaborator, customers and providers to reduce emissions and delivers Ethyl Acetate environmentally friendly. In next 10 months, the emission inventory will be delivered and a new analysis will be done to define 2011 strategy for emission reduction and climate neutrality.
Cloroetil is continuosly searching for increases on environmental performance. In 2009 the boiler fuel was switched from fossil to renewable fuel (biomass). A Cleand Development Mechanism project is being developed to ensure that the emission reduction has the highest market level certification (UNFCCC). Cloroetil commitment is to deliver in 2010 its first emmission inventory report. Since the main solvent produced by Cloroetil is used for packaging, Cloroetil is encouraging its partners to inventory its footprints and further neutralize it´s emissions in a way to make available final products that can have as renewable emissions as possible to seek climate neutrality. First partnerships are already being developed and first results should be available by 2012.
