Strategy
Igloo Villages are on their way to becoming carbon neutral. The countdown has begun. On the 25th of December 2009, the world famous Igloo Villages opened again, offering visitors an unforgettable overnight experience in the snow.
There is also some good news for the environment this season: Iglu-Dorf GmbH nature experience is set to become even greener. More specifically, the goal of founder and CEO Adrian Günter is to make the igloo hotels completely carbon neutral in the future. Energy provider BKW FMB Energie AG (BKW) will help the igloo villages meet this ambitious goal. During last year's season, BKW toured the Igloo Villages and analyzed their co2 emissions. In conclusion, Bruno Spring, product manager at BKW in charge of energy efficiency for nonresidential customers, said that compared to conventional hotels, the Igloo Villages were definitely very good in terms of energy efficiency and electricity consumption, but there was still room for improvement. As they were offering these consulting services to their customers as part of their new one to one energy program, the pilot project with Iglu Dorf GmbH was the ideal collaboration; said Spring.
Every last detail counts. The Igloo Villages draws most of their energy from the local power supply and hardly use any fossil fuels. The sauna and the whirlpool use the most electricity, but these are key components of the romantic Igloo Villages. Günter, the Igloo Village pioneer, said that they were very aware of this. This is why the company chose the most energy-efficient whirlpool with the least heat loss and also insulated it. Optimal insulation is a crucial factor in the design of the village’s saunas. Other measures are aimed at improving the smallest details. Günter added that they want to make their environmentally friendly product even greener and more sustainable, so that they can do their part for future generations and the environment, and raise awareness of this topic among their customers and other companies.
Since it takes more than just energy efficiency measures to become carbon neutral, Iglu Dorf GmbH plans to reduce co2 emissions by using green electricity and obtaining certificates from MyClimate, a climate protection organization. The company has not yet decided which projects it will support through these initiatives. but Günter explains that they are considering becoming involved in the area of hydroelectric power.
