Strategy
KQ’s policy is to use sound and responsible practices to protect the environment in strict compliance with statutory and approved procedures that assure the highest possible environmental protection standards. In addition KQ is committed to conformance to standards and applicable national and international regulations governing aviation and the environment. In regards to strategies for reducing Greenhouse Gas emissions; Kenya Airways reports its emissions as per the EU ETS system requirements by monitoring and controlling the amount of air pollutants that are released into the environment in order to enhance efforts to conserve and protect the environment. KQ is approved by the United Kingdom (UK) Environment Agency that enables it to participate in the European Union Environmental Management Program, through a legally binding initiative - the European Union Environment Trading Scheme (EU-ETS ).
In another front KQ has set up a voluntary Carbon offsetting tool aimed at providing a channel for its customers to contribute towards reducing the effect of carbon emissions by supporting environmental sustainability initiatives. The initiative developed in cooperation with International Air Transport Association (IATA), enables KQ to offer its passengers the opportunity to participate directly in offsetting the Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions related to their flights. Kenya Airways prides itself as the 1st Airline in Africa to be able to offer the Carbon Offset Program Other successful environmental sustainability programs by KQ that aim to combat Climate Change include:
- Ngong Hills Reforestation Project.
- Newer fuel efficient aircraft and fuel saving initiatives that have been employed throughout its operations
- Support of the Olkaria III Phase 2 Geothermal Expansion Project in Kenya which has been successfully commissioned by Orpower 4, Inc. located in Hell’s Gate National Park near Naivasha, Kenya. SHORT, MEDIUM AND LONG TERM GOALS FOR EMISSIONS REDUCTION AND OFFSETTING.
- Monitoring the Carbon Footprint for all Ground and Flight Operations.
- Investing in more carbon neutral projects through the use of appropriate technologies.
- Increased stakeholder cooperation to build capacity in identifying opportunities for emissions reductions and offsetting.
- Improvement in operations efficiencies with the aim of reducing emissions.
