Waterless printing does not use dampening solutions, which contain alcohol or VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds). Waterless printing eliminates the need for up to 100 000 liters of water and 10 000 liters of alcohol per year consumed by a typical mid-size printer.

Moreover, Kyueisha has been using Non-VOC Ink which is 100 per cent Soy Based Ink. Using Non-VOC inks help to keep the VOC levels well below the standards of conventional Soy Based Inks. Kyueisha also is an FSC Certified (Forest Stewardship Council) printer. It participates in a Chain-of-Custody system that ensures paper products are manufactured in a responsible manner from responsibly managed forests. With regard to its management system, Kyueisha is certified ISO14001 and ISO9001 its the main plant.

FSC Label
Kyueisha has printed the Japanese versions of UNEP magazines such as “Our Planet” and “TUNZA” since 2005. The Japanese version of UNEP official magazines are printed on paper that is approved by FSC and printed by the eco-friendly printing methods described above. In addition, Kyueisha uses the Computer to Plate (CTP) printing method which leads to filmless printing that reduces CO2 emissions. It is also planning to offset the greenhouse gases emitted throughout the life cycle of printing products on their next issues of “TUNZA” at their own company’s expense.
Strategy
Kyueisha has made reduction of greenhouse gas emissions a top priority. It has worked on reducing its carbon footprint and offsetting its carbon emissions since last year. Kyueisha calculates the total set of greenhouse gases emitted throughout the printing cycle, from mining of natural resources to manufacturing, selling, and disposing of waste. It not only measures its carbon footprint, but also reduces unavoidable emissions by purchasing offsets.
Kyueisha has offset 25 000kg of CO2 and 8,000kW/h of electricity in 2009. It is planning to offset 100,000kg of CO2 and 10,000kW/h of electricity in 2010. Kyueisha buys carbon offset credits from COJ (Carbon Offset Japan) and Energygreen Company, which handles Green Power Certification, a scheme for encouraging corporate and other entities to use natural energy as one of their voluntary measures for energy conservation and environmental protection.
