About
In September 2003 Nørrebro Bryghus opened its combined brewery, restaurant and bar in a former metal workshop close to downtown Copenhagen. The mission from day one was to contribute to a new evolution and expansion of the Danish beer culture.
The Nørrebro Bryghus concept is based on creating the total experience – great beers, modern beer cuisine, excellent service in a unique ambience surrounded by award winning design and contemporary architecture.
In March 2009, a new and important aspect was added to the Nørrebro Bryghus mission, when the brewery restaurant became carbon neutral as regards its energy consumption - including water, heating, gas and electricity - and made environmentally-responsible behaviour top priority for all employees and all business activities involving continuously reducing its carbon footprint. To celebrate this leap of faith, Nørrebro Bryghus launched Denmark’s first carbon neutral beer, Globe Ale, encouraging its customers to consider their responsibility for the environment through their actions – a relatively small, but still enjoyable first step can be drinking a beer!
For its efforts in relation to the global warming agenda, Nørrebro Bryghus was nominated for Danish Climate Cup 2009 award, an award for climate conscious companies.
As it is the vision of Nørrebro Bryghus to supply quality beer to any venue where the customers expect the very best in craft beer, we launched our beers on bottles and kegs in 2006. Export began in 2007 with Sweden, Finland and the USA as the first markets importing Nørrebro Bryghus beers. As the first Danish craft brewery, Nørrebro Bryghus won two bronze medals at the 2008 World Beer Cup® – the Olympics of beer – in San Diego.
Nørrebro Bryghus is the realisation of brew master Anders Kissmeyers dream and his vision, passion and competence is now a big part of the culture of Nørrebro Bryghus. Today Nørrebro Bryghus is run by a team which is not only highly professional, but also devoted to good beer experiences! Beer is the key word at Nørrebro Bryghus.
The staff at Nørrebro Bryghus know their beer and are happy to explain the various tastes, ingredients and processes of brewing beer. The bar and the restaurant serve up to 10 different hand brewed Nørrebro Bryghus beer and sometimes also guest brews from other Danish Breweries. The chef uses the beer creatively, and it is one of the central ingredients in many of the dishes served in the restaurant. The staff will furthermore recommend the beer best suited to accompany your meal.
Strategy
Nørrebro Bryghus’ strategy for reducing greenhouse gas emissions can be outlined as follows:
Since March 1, 2009, Nørrebro Bryghus, which, in addition to the combined brewery and restaurant in Ryesgade, Copenhagen, runs Baldersbrønde Bryggeri A/S in Baldersbrønde outside Copenhagen, has been carbon neutral on its collective energy consumption of electricity, district heating and gas at both addresses.
Nørrebro Bryghus launched Denmark’s first carbon neutral beer in March 2009: Globe Ale – an organic, clear, pale, light and fruity ale (4.8 per cent ABV) which complements lighter meals. By December 1st, 2009, all beer produced and sold by Nørrebro Bryghus will become carbon neutral. Carbon neutrality of the Nørrebro Bryghus beers covers not only the energy consumption associated with the brewing process, but is based on a ‘cradle to grave’ CO2 emission compensation, covering everything from the raw materials, packaging materials, transport, production, distribution, waste emissions, collection through the recycling of packaging materials (base data for these calculations are sourced through the Danish Brewer’s Association/COWI, a Danish Engineering Consultancy firm). In practical terms, Nørrebro Bryghus makes itself carbon neutral on its energy consumption by purchasing and destroying carbon credits equivalent to the actual consumption of all its business entities.
Every time a carbon credit is destroyed, it increases the demand for available carbon credits and, consequently, the price of the remaining credits will go up. When the price goes up on the carbon credits, it becomes desirable for the utility companies to invest in eco-friendly energy. At the same time, Nørrebro Bryghus has embarked on an ambitious strategy in order to reduce its own actual carbon footprint by making energy savings top of the agenda in all activities, continuously reducing its consumptions of water, heating, gas and electricity. Nørrebro Bryghus is gradually converting its entire beer portfolio to certified organic production.
The Nørrebro Bryghus restaurant offers and highlights climate friendly dishes on its menu, and strives to source foods that have as small an environmental impact as possible. The Nørrebro Bryghus restaurant offers its guests a ‘climate promise form’ thus reminding every single restaurant guest that they all have a personal responsibility for their choices – also as regards their impact on the climate, and advising on simple, but effective measures that can be undertaken by everyone to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Nørrebro Bryghus is continuously working on sourcing brewing raw materials that cause a lesser load on the environment.
Nørrebro Bryghus is cooperating actively with the Danish Ministry of Climate and Energy’s ‘1 Tonne Less’ campaign’, the Danish Electricity Saving Trust and the new environmentally friendly utilities company, Modstrøm. Nørrebro Bryghus publishes its objectives and progress in the carbon footprint reduction project on its website
