About

Oserian Development Company is an eco-friendly fresh cut-flower growing company based in Naivasha, Kenya. It is the largest, most technologically advanced operation of its kind, a leading force in innovation and environmentally responsible farming in Kenya and Africa.

The term Oserian is derived from a Maasai word translating to “Place of Peace”. Oserian is one of seven companies in the Mavuno Group whose focus is delivering high quality service through the supply chain from the growing segment to the global market and customer base.

At Oserian we grow flowers mainly for export to the United Kingdom and Netherlands as well as other countries in Europe as well as Australia, Japan and the USA. We grow roses, carnations, statice, lisianthus and a broad range of fillers developed through our first class New Product Development strategy.

Oserian is certified to a range of international Socio-ethical and environmental standards including Fairtrade, LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming), MPS (Milieu Programma Sierteelt), BOPP (British Ornamental Plant Producers) and the KFC Silver (Kenya Flower Council). These certifications are issued only after strict audits and surveillance programmes are carried out to ensure compliance. In addition we work closely with local and global organisations and institutions that champion responsible production of goods and services. Over the years Oserian has won many awards for its innovation, first class products and its impressive social and environmental management record.

Oserian is committed to a future with greener, cleaner, efficient production throughout its supply-chain by investing in environmentally friendly technological innovations.

Strategy

Environment Policy
Oserian is committed to the protection of the environment and wildlife through sustainable utilization of natural resources, minimization of pollution and waste, conservation of indigenous flora and fauna, sound agricultural practices, efficient land management, the enhancement of wildlife habitats and the maintenance of wild landscapes and rural communities.

Counting our emissions
We have been able to make an inventory of all our operations and activities to determine our sources of ghg emissions. By so doing, we are able to quantify our emissions and start to work towards reduction and plan activities and programs to help us go neutral.

Geothermal Energy – Renewable energy
At Oserian, we generate electricity using clean geothermal energy to power our operations. Geothermal energy is the energy derived from beneath the earth’s surface and is one of the cleanest forms of energy as it does not release any greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. We also use the waste heat from our geothermal station to heat our greenhouses, in the only system of this kind in the world.

Waste management
Reduce – Reduce - Recycle is the working theme for management of all our waste types. Our plastic recycling unit helps us to keep Oserian cleaner. We re-use our wood. We have a careful waste management strategy across the farm to ensure that we remain focused on improving how we handle our wastes. We are currently working on a project to harness methane from the waste generated within our housing estates, yet another step in turning a waste product into a beneficial resource and contributing in reducing the emissions of this greenhouse gas.

Reafforestation
Oserian is taking an active role in greening Kenya. We understand the importance of trees as a carbon sink and are keen to ensure that we do our bit by planting as many trees as we can. Our tree nursery generates over 50,000 tree seedling per year, all of which we plant within our estates and donate to the community around us.

Preserving wild areas
Over 18,000 acres have been set aside at Oserian for nature conservation in what forms the Oserian wildlife sanctuary. By leaving this land wild, we preserve the nature-given biological sink that the flora contained in this area provides..

Smart Farming Practices
Oserian is committed to a steady reduction of fertilizers and pesticides used. Our Integrated Pest Management system has resulted in a 100% phase out the use of WHO Class I chemicals for pest control. We work with natural predators to control the pests that affect our flowers and carefully manage the chemical applications that may be necessary in times of outbreaks. Our scouting system enables us to act on infestations hotspots hence we continue to achieve a reduction in chemical alternatives. Our hydroponics system also ensures minimal water use and fertilizer applications that are specially developed for the targeted flower crop.
