Strategy
PSRD is strongly committed to its goal of sustainable development. They perceive the principle of sustainability as an imperative need for the development of the global economy. In the face of the phenomenon of climate change and global warming, following these principles would ensure the well-being of today as well as tomorrow’s generation.
PSRD is an organisation that is gradually expanding its frontiers in the world. Their projected greenhouse gas inventory for the year 2010 approximates to 33 tons CO2. They believe in achieving climate neutrality in their operations on an annual basis and will be carbon neutral from 2010 - 2011 onwards. Enlisted here are few prudent measures which have been adopted by them keeping in mind the minimization of carbon impact of their business:
a) Energy efficiency practices - They monitor, manage and reduce their energy consumption by implementing efficiency measures. PSRD’s principal energy consumption is in the following sectors.
· Transport and travel
They minimize their travelling by the extensive use of teleconferencing at workplace. 75 per cent of their employees prefer travelling by public transport in order to save energy which would have been accrued by individual vehicles. Air travel gets limited by the use of digital technology and PSRD makes it a point to complete maximum work when on travel so that further excursions may be avoided.
· Electricity
An average consumption of 1000 units of electricity per month is expected out of their office in India. In order to bring it down to 800 units by this year PSRD have installed Fluorescent tubes in their office. Electrical appliances like air conditioners, refrigerator and computers are switched off when not required. They use laptops instead of desktop to minimize energy consumption. The appliances are therefore used sparingly which lowers down their electricity consumption considerably. By this initiative, they are expecting to bring down their emissions to 22 ton of CO2 in this financial year.
b) Waste - Reducing the amount of waste generated and recycling waste wherever possible is what PSRD does as a waste management practice. Replacement of paper cups by washable ceramic mugs is one of the initiatives by its employees.
c) Awareness in employees and society - PSRD organises regular awareness generation among its employees to its aims and objectives towards sustainability in its business operations and industry as a whole. This is done by regular interactions and training programs. The results of these awareness generation programs are quite visible in the lifestyle of their employees with few of them opting for public transport in lieu of their individual vehicles.
d) GHG measurement, monitoring and mitigation - PSRD would regularly monitor its GHG emissions and continuously workout mitigation strategies to curb its emissions. Periodic measurement of GHG emissions would give them a fair idea about their progress in being climate neutral. They have planned a yearly GHG inventory measurement program.
e) Offsetting - At the end of the year, PSRD commits to offsets its emission with gold standard carbon credits for achieving a complete carbon neutrality to its operations.
A major part of their initiatives towards real action towards climate neutrality lies not in their commitment, but in encouraging other corporate players in the industry to commit to sustainable practices and adopt carbon reduction measures. They not only advise and encourage them, but also help them in managing these practices and reporting their actions to their stakeholders for supporting their mission towards sustainable development. They do ensure a wide acceptability of their services and ideas by preparing frameworks and management strategies for corporations to include carbon levers and social initiatives in their mainstream business in a profitable manner.
Currently, they are in the process of developing renewable energy projects in Asian and African regions. These projects not only abate greenhouse gas emissions in a considerable amount but also contribute towards social, technological, environmental and financial sustainability in the local region. They are also trying to avail CDM benefits for these projects in order to make them a financially viable investments for the project proponents.
