About

Senoko Power is the largest power generation company in Singapore, providing over 32 per cent of the nation’s electricity needs. Senoko was the first power generation company in Singapore to import clean natural gas for power generation in 1992, to launch the first combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plant in 1996 and to be certified ISO 9000 in 1998, OHSAS 18001 in 2003 and ISO 14001 in 2004. Senoko Power still maintains the industry’s best safety record, with around 864 days or almost 3 millions manhours without loss time injury.

Senoko Power is conscious of the obligations to the community and the environment. The company views itself as part of the solution to long-term sustainable development. Environment, health and safety are among the company’s top business agenda. Senoko has been collaborating with agencies, NGOs and the public to raise awareness of the impacts of climate change on the environment among schoolchildren, who will be the leaders of tomorrow.

Strategy

Vision

To be the preferred energy supplier in Singapore.

Key CSR Effort & Initiative

Internal Capacity Building: On 6 September 2006, Senoko signed a pledge to support fair employment practices.

External Capacity Building:  Senoko Power is a genuine triple bottom line company concerned not only with its economic performance, but also its impact upon the environment and society. We conceived the National Weather Study Project (NWSP) to address the second and third elements of the triple bottom line approach.

The NWSP was designed to raise awareness among the student population of how climate change and shifting weather patterns can impact the environment and Singaporeans’ lifestyles.

Participating schools in the NWSP were equipped with a mini-weather station to measure and analyse wind speed, wind direction, humidity, rainfall, temperature and solar intensity. The students were tasked with undertaking projects that explore the significance of climate change and its impact on Singapore or globally. They were encouraged to widen their knowledge beyond the textbooks and classrooms, and to appreciate the relationship between this knowledge and their daily lives.

The inaugural NWSP in 2006 attracted 178 primary schools, secondary schools and junior colleges, or about half of all such schools in Singapore. These schools collectively submitted 279 projects for the competition. For NWSP 2007, 234 participating schools (about two-thirds of all local primary schools, secondary schools and junior colleges) produced a total of 372 project submissions. The participation rate for 2007 competition was 31 per cent higher than that of the inaugural event, and the number of submissions surged by 33 per cent. This shows that the NWSP is increasingly viewed by schools as an important platform for educating students on climate change, and the students are becoming more interested in environmental issues.

The NWSP was launched in 2005 with a $1 million pledge from Senoko Power. As of today, seven organisations have come on board as official NWSP partners, namely:

  • The Ministry of Education
  • The Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources
  • The National Environment Agency
  • The National Parks Board
  • The Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore
  • The Building and Construction Authority
  • The Singapore Science Centre
  • Positive outcomes & achievements

Climate change is a global issue. Through the NWSP, Senoko Power hopes that the participating students will think globally but act locally when it comes to protecting and caring for the environment. Together with the seven supporting partners, Senoko will continue providing the power to make a difference in Singaporeans’ lives.

Learning Points & Conclusion

A successful organisation should not be focused solely on achieving business goals. A more sustainable business model requires socially-responsible companies to act ethically in their dealings with all stakeholders and the community at large.
