Strategy

Wright Communications seeks to educate and assist New Zealand businesses to enhance their reputations by becoming proactive in their sustainability initiatives and improve stakeholder relationships.

Wright Communications has implemented a number of strategies in order to respond to climate change.

Carbon neutrality

As part of our commitment to reducing climate change, Wright Communications has set the sustainability standard for the public relations industry by achieving carbon neutrality through Landcare Research’s carboNZero programme. Many of Wright Communications clients’ are pursuing carbon neutrality, making it imperative to understand the process first hand. Continual participation in the programme is part of an ongoing commitment to reduce the company’s greenhouse gas emissions in respect of the consultancy’s operations. Involvement with the carboNZero programme centred on taking responsibility for our carbon footprint so it can be actively managed going forward.

Business related travel

Business related travel is a source of our emissions. We have begun to address this issue by implementing several schemes.

Purchased a low-emission Smart Car for staff travel to client meetings
Setting up a Navman inside the Smart car to help us ascertain the quickest route to each meeting to ensure the smallest amount of fossil fuels are used for each trip
Set up teleconferencing and videoconferencing to minimise face-to-face client meetings
Encourage staff to consider walking to meetings where it is practical instead of driving or catching a taxi
Encourage staff to walk or take public transport to commute work.
Waste and recycling

Wright Communications aims to reduce, reuse and recycle where possible.

We have:

-Set up plastic and paper recycling bins in the office which staff are required to use
-Set up a facility that enables us to recycle used toner cartridges.
-Energy efficiency

-Purchased a printer that helps our team conserve resources such as duplex printing and the utilisation of draft printing mode to save ink and paper
Installed a scanner so that we can send documents electronically rather than via mail

- when documents need to be couriered, Wright Communications uses a carbon neutral courier service.
-Sustainable furniture and cleaning products

Purchased sustainable Herman Miller office furniture for all consultants desks and chairs, and in our boardroom and reception area
Ensured that only eco-friendly cleaning products are used in the office.
Electricity

Though Wright Communications operates a small consultancy, electricity use is still a significant source of emissions.

Our computers are automatically set to power-save mode as a default and staff are encouraged to turn off their computers when they go home. Our printer is also ENERGY STAR certified, aiding us to reduce our power consumption. We have recently upgraded our server which is more energy efficient. When purchasing or upgrading new technological product, we consider energy efficiency.

Sustainability initiatives

Wright Communications strives to maintain its commitment to sustainability. Our aim is to create a positive impact on New Zealand businesses and provide continuous support through leadership.

Wright Communications provides pro bono public relations services to the Sustainable Business Network – a forum for businesses that are interested in sustainable development practice, promoting and supporting businesses on the journey. Supporting the Sustainable Business Network allows us to further extend our services and educate businesses about sustainability reporting, practices and procedures.

We have appointed a sustainability strategist to assist our clients and our own business. We are also members of the Sustainable Business Network and the New Zealand Business Council for Sustainable development.
