Environmental Assessment of Ogoniland

At the request of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, UNEP is conducting an independent assessment of the environmental and public health impacts of oil contamination in Ogoniland, in the Niger Delta, and options for remediation.

UNEP’s decision to respond to this request recognizes the human and environmental tragedy associated with oil contamination in the Ogoni region – where oil exploration and production began in the 1950s.

To undertake its scientific assessment, UNEP is working with the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Nigerian government officials at the national and Rivers State level, traditional rulers, local landholders, laboratories and many other stakeholders. UNEP’s fieldwork and laboratory analysis are now completed. UNEP’s environmental assessment report will be published in 2011.

UNEP colleagues remember Clement Kemte Nekabari Faah, 1960-2011
