Between 1999 and 2004, a series of eight regional workshops around the world on invasive alien species was convened by the Global Invasive Species Programme (GISP) and three of its partners: the World Conservation Union (IUCN), CAB International (CABI), and the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE). UNEP and other organisations co-sponsored the workshops. Through these workshops, the different regions were able to develop regional approaches to address invasive alien species, which tied in to the ongoing dialogue on the most appropriate nature for a global response.
The regional workshops raised awareness of the problems of invasive alien species as well as opportunities on how to best respond. They allowed regional participants to assess the current status of the problem in the region and to forge cooperation within and between nations. And they laid the groundwork for development of regional strategies on invasive alien species. The workshops identified priority short-term and long-term actions in various sectors (legal, capacity building, awareness raising, etc.). They also generated momentum for further action at the regional level through findings, recommendations, and declarations.
