In addition to the recent adoption and implementation of the Bali Strategic Plan (see case study above), UNEP has undertaken a significant number of capacity building efforts at the national, regional, and global levels on a wide range of environmental topics. Some of these courses have been conducted by UNEP at its Nairobi headquarters, and many of the activities have been done at the national, sub-regional, and regional levels by UNEP’s regional offices.
As an illustration, the UNEP Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (ROAP) expects to undertake the following capacity building courses in 2006:
- 2nd Regional Training Programme in Environmental Law
- Regional Seminar on Revival of Customary Environmental Law and Ethics (Hue, Vietnam)
- Central Asian Judges Conference (Almaty, Kazakhstan)
- South Asian Environmental Law Workshop
- National Workshop on Environmental Law for Parliamentarians (Phnom Penh, Cambodia)
- Training Workshop in Environmental Compliance and Audit (Cebu, Philippines)
- Needs Assessment and Launching the National Task Force for Environmental Law (Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia)
- National Workshop on Compliance of Environmental Law (Vientiane, Lao PDR)
As the titles suggest, these events seek to strengthen capacity of environmental lawyers, judges, parliamentarians, regulators, auditors, and other professionals.
