Checklist for Steps to Follow After Negotiations

Following are some of the key steps for following up after negotiations. In the weeks after the negotiating meeting:

  • As appropriate, draft or provide input to the delegation report on a timely basis. One way to facilitate this is to draft a preliminary report, that is circulated quickly followed by a final report. This ensures that the key information is circulated in a timely fashion.
  • Consolidate meeting documents and related materials. If there is a central library or repository for negotiations (see discussion following Guideline 10(d)), provide it with a copy of these documents.
  • Ensure appropriate debriefing of Ministerial/Departmental and other governmental stakeholders.
  • Ensure official financial transactions are performed (e.g., between Ministries or Departments, to the Secretariat, etc.).

This checklist draws upon a similar checklist from Negotiator’s Handbook for MEAs, (UNEP/University of Joensuu/Government of Canada 2006).
