The development and implementation of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) constitute the cornerstone of national implementation of the CBD. NBSAPs are developed through a national consultative and participatory process involving all relevant stakeholders. It assesses the status and trends regarding biological diversity (including the laws, policies, institutions, and conservation initiatives); identifies problems and constraints; and establishes policies, strategies, and actions required to effectively implement the Convention and to enhance the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity within specific timeframes. Such actions may include integration of biodiversity concerns into other areas (also known as “mainstreaming”). To-date such strategies and action plans have been developed in over 100 States.
