Emergence of CITES as a Green Certification Scheme

Although not expressly established as a green certification scheme, CITES is moving towards recognition as such a scheme in which governments effectively certify that specimens in a particular shipment have been legally acquired and that their trade will not be detrimental to the survival of that species in the wild. The CITES regulatory certification scheme relies on CITES Management and Scientific Authorities acting independently of the commercial interests of suppliers and users. Greater recognition of such an operational certification scheme depends on robust credible implementation, primarily achieved through the standardisation process.
