In the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), institutional coordination on environmental matters is done through an Inter-Ministerial Committee on Environment, Nature Conservation, and Tourism. This Committee was originally established by Law No. 75/232 of 22 July 1975.
The Minister of Environment serves as the President of the Committee. Members of the Committee include Ministers whose portfolios address environmental issues in some way; private sector (including the Enterprise Federation of the Congo); civil society; research centres and universities; and local authorities. The Committee has an Executive Secretary to coordinate its activities, as well as national commissions for each sector.
The Committee is responsible for reviewing all projects, programmes, and activities that affect the environment. It also assists the Ministry of Environment in conducting activities. The Committee has, for instance helped prepare the national delegation for MEA negotiations, led the negotiations, and worked to implement MEAs to which the DRC is a Party.
