Coordination through Environmental Cells in Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso has established “environmental cells” to facilitate institutional coordination on environmental projects. The Permanent Secretariat of Burkina’s National Council on Environment and Sustainable Development (CONEDD) is responsible for integrating principles of environmental protection and sustainable development in the development and the implementation of the policies and sectoral strategies. As one approach to realizing its environmental and sustainable development goals, the Permanent Secretariat is establishing environmental cells.

These environmental cells include representatives from the relevant Ministries, publicly-owned establishments, and private companies whose activities relate to the environment. In particular, the environmental cells seek to ensure that the design and the implementation of projects take into account the principles and procedures of environmental impact assessment. This is important because environmental impact assessments in Burkina Faso are a key measure for sound environmental management and protection in the execution of the projects and programmes. As of 2006, three environmental cells are functional.

For more information on CONEDD, see the case study on “Burkina Faso’s Conference of the National Council on Environment and Sustainable Development” following Guideline 42.
