Australia’s Specialised Environmental Court

In 1979, the government of New South Wales, Australia established the specialised Land and Environment Court (LEC) as the cornerstone of its Land and Environment Court Act. A specialist environmental court was created to administer environmental law. The court was placed at the top of the judicial hierarchy of trial courts, as a superior court of record, which is equivalent in status to the Supreme Court and subject only to the Court of Appeal.
