Environmental Police Officers and Environmental Prosecutors in Brazil

The Public Prosecution is a permanent institution within the governmental structure of Brazil. It is essential to the juridical functioning of Brazil, and it has the duty to defend the juridical order, the democratic regime, and inalienable social and individual rights and interests. Environment rights are included in these duties.

The Public Prosecution comprises two components: the Public Prosecution of the Union, and the Public Prosecutions of the States. Both components have specialised units that are responsible for prosecuting cases regarding the environment.

Environmental protection is also the duty of various police agencies in Brazil, including the federal police, civil police forces, and military police forces. Their offices are spread over Brazilian territory. Among the various police forces, there are a number of police officers that specialise in environmental crimes.
