Interpol Training Course in Combatting Environmental Crime

Interpol has developed a unique environmental crimes training course for law enforcement officers. This training programme utilises a multi-national training force comprised of senior law enforcement personnel and attorneys whose area of expertise is environmental crimes investigations and litigation. The course provides courseroom instruction via lectures, case studies, interactive scenarios and breakout sessions, and audio/video presentations to law enforcement officers, first responders, environmental enforcement programme personnel, and related prosecutorial and judicial officials. This training provides a greater understanding and ability to respond practically to the broad array of environmental crimes scenarios and officer-safety issues at environmental crime scenes and events.

Students are provided with effective and practical investigative and forensic tools, methods, and techniques that can be applied to investigations involving all environmental crimes affecting the air, land (hazardous wastes and pesticides), water, and wildlife. There is additional focus on issues related to environmental terrorism, hot-zone forensics, and transboundary crimes issues. All modules are broadly construed to provide basic overviews and understanding of each relevant environmental media, and issues of concern specific to all relevant MEAs, including the Basel Convention, CITES, Stockholm Convention, Rotterdam Convention, and the Montreal Protocol.

All modules address health and safety issues that may confront the police officer conducting an environmental crimes investigation. International police cooperation focuses on transboundary issues and provides tools and information to officers seeking assistance during the investigation of cross-border environmental crimes. All modules are designed to focus specifically on the issues of concern in the region where the training will be delivered. There is a strong emphasis on learthing through student participation and interaction, which is underscored by providing practical exercises and breakout sessions throughout the course.
