Other UNEP activities on Regional Seas
Marine Biodiversity
The Global Programme of Action (GPA) contributes to the implementation of the Jakarta Mandate. Examples of the support offered are:
- Economic Study of Mangrove Forests in Sri Lanka;
- Attending a workshop on Governance of High Seas Biodiversity Conservation and Conservation of the Oceans using Ecosystems Based Management. Both meetings were aimed at advancement of practical action to improve the conservation and management of the biodiversity of high seas and deep oceans and to identify the impediments and potential solutions to ecosystem based management of oceans activities at domestic, regional and global levels;
- Participation in the Liaison Group on rapid assessment of marine and coastal biological diversity;
- Initiation of a study on Global Initiatives and Instruments that can assist Small Islands Developing States (SIDS) in addressing their environmental concerns, including, among others international and regional conventions and their protocols;
- The Physical Alteration and Destruction of Habitat Programme has commissioned studies in the Wider Caribbean:
1) ‘Review of National Legislation Related to Coastal and Marine Resources Management and the Adequacy or Inadequacy of the Institutional Arrangements Under Which this Takes Place’, covering Jamaica, Belize, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, Mexico, Cuba and Venezuela.
2) ‘An Economic Study to Analyse the Extent and Utility of User Fees in the Wider Caribbean Region’, including Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Mexico and St. Lucia.
