Air Pollution and Atmospheric Brown Cloud (ABC) Programme

UNEP in collaboration with sub-regional and regional institutions has played a key role in enhancing regional cooperation on transboundary air pollution issues by facilitating the formation of inter-governmental regional initiatives on air pollution issues. The programme support implementation of inter-governmental initiatives on air pollution as well as Atmospheric Brown Clouds (ABC) Programme. The ABC programme, which pioneered the studies on large-scale atmospheric haze composed of black carbon and other aerosol particles and ozone including its precursor gases, is facilitating knowledge to action translation by assisting governments and stakeholders. Inter-governmental networks are being supported by scientific information from the strategically located aerosol observatories operated by ABC science team.  Such support would enable the countries to draw up and implement national and regional action plans to abate air pollution, based on a fuller understanding of transboundary air pollution issues.
