The Rio+20 Conference will convene in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on 20th - 22nd June 2012 and will mark the 40th anniversary of the Stockholm Conference in 1972 and the 20th anniversary of the Rio Conference in 1992.
It will convene Heads of State and Government and other representatives at the highest possible level to:
1.Secure renewed political commitment for sustainable development;
2. Assess the progress to date and the remaining gaps in the implementation of the outcomes of the major summits on sustainable development; and,
3. Address new and emerging challenges.
The Conference will focus on two main themes:
1. A green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication; and
2. The institutional framework for sustainable development.
The Rio+20 Conference will be a milestone event which is expected to signify a crucial step forward in terms of achieving sustainable development goals. It will provide the international community with an opportunity to review progress and renew its commitment to establishing an adequate basis for action, including identifying the features of an effective institutional framework for sustainable development.
