NOTES
1. ORGANISATION
UNEP-Dewa is organizing Planning Meeting on the Development of a UNEP Module for the Assessment of the Marine Environment Nairobi, Kenya from 19-21 November 2003. Participants are kindly request to arrive in Nairobi (see map) by 19 November 2003.
2. HOTEL
The accommodation will be arranged at the Hotel Stanley (5 star at $82 B&B) on Kenyatta Avenue/Kimathi Street. Please inform us the date, time and flight No., of both arrival and departure so that hotel reservations can be made. Arrangements have been made for you to be picked up from the airport by the Stanley Hotel upon arrival (subject to flight details being provided to Ms. Pravina Patel, see below).
3. VISA
Please use the letter of invitation to obtain visa for Kenya from your nearest Embassy of Kenya. Visa can also be obtained upon arrival at the airport and costs US$50. Please make sure you have correct change with you. Kindly ascertain from your end if you can obtain Visa at the Nairobi Airport. There are some countries, which are exempt from this arrangement (see Visa requirement). If you require visa, please commence the procedure immediately as there are delays sometimes.
4. MEETING VENUE
Planning Meeting on the Development of a UNEP Module for the Assessment of the Marine Environment will be held at United Nations Environment Programme United Nations Avenue, Gigiri, Nairobi, Kenya. Block “C”, Room C-226.
You will receive building passes and these must be worn while on the UN Complex. Please identify yourself and you will be conducted to Room C-226 where the meeting will take place.
The UNEP building provides services like meals, bank facilities, travel agencies where you can get your flights reconfirmed (Ms. Patel and Ms. Mochache can assist you), gift shop, etc.
5. EXPENSES
The accommodation has been organized in The Stanley Hotel – 5 star at US$82 B&B. Each participant will be picked up from the Airport and taken to the Hotel of their choice. There will be transportation at 08.00 hours each morning and the same transportation will take you back to the hotel in the evenings at 17.00 hours. Transport from the hotel to the airport will be US$ 10. Airport tax is nowadays included with your ticket.
6. WEATHER CONDITIONS
The weather in Nairobi will be between 12º to 26º C degrees and quite pleasant in November. Occasional showers can occur, usually in the evenings. You are advised to bring a warm sweater and a light jacket.
7. SECURITY
Visitors are advised to exercise precaution as street muggings can occur during day or night. Avoid walking around at night. Use taxis from the hotels. Do not carry large sums of money when shopping and do not wear expensive jewelry etc. while walking on the streets. Please guard your briefcases, laptops, handbags and small luggage while checking in and out of a hotel.
8. HEALTH
A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is mandatory for all visitors to Kenya. It is advisable that they be vaccinated 10 days prior to departure.
There is very little risk of Malaria in Nairobi. However, if Travelers are planning a trip to the coast or to highlands (above 2,500m), it is advisable to consult their physicians for malaria prophylaxes.
In the major hotels and restaurants of the city the food can be consumed without reservations. It is advisable to drink only boiled or mineral water.
9. Post & Telecommunications Services
There is a Post office on the UN Complex from where you can mail letters, faxes and make international calls. Hotels charge 100% extra for International calls. The post office with telegram, telex, fax and international telephone facilities will be open from 8.30 to 4pm. Pay phones for use with phone-cards, which may be purchased from the Post Office, are available also at the Post Office.
10. DOCUMENTS
Any participants wishing to distribute documents/publications during the meeting, kindly give them to Ms. Patel or Ms. Mochache.
11. COMMISSARY
Arrangements are also being made for all the participants to get access to the UN Commissary for duty free items such as alcohol, tobacco products, perfumes, etc.
12. UN Gift Center
The United Nations Gift Center, situated adjacent to the Commissary will be open from 8.30 to 6pm. It has a large and varied list of items available, including souvenirs, mementos and gift items.
13. FIRST AID
Emergency first aid will be available. The services of a doctor can be obtained if required. A nurse is on duty during the office hours and can be contacted in block F, Room 117, Ext. 2267 or 2268.
14. BANK
Branches of the Kenya Commercial Bank and Citi Bank will be open on week days from 9am to 4pm.
15. CATERING FACILITIES
There are three regular caterers on the UN Complex contracted to provide food and beverages for breakfast, lunch as well as snacks during coffee breaks.
