Jan Betlem holds a MSc.degree in Ecology Surveys and he has working experience related to conservation and obsolete pesticides issues in more than 50 different countries worldwide.

Betlem was recurrent advisor for the Dutch Government, UNEP, UNDP, FAO, bilateral donors and individual Governments on conservation and obsolete pesticides issues, review and evaluation missions and support of National Implementation Plans for the Stockholm Convention, before he joined UNEP Division of GEF Coordination in May 2006 as Task Manager for POPs.

The GEF is an independent financial organization that provides grants to developing countries and countries with economies in transition for projects that benefit the global environment. UNEP is one of the Implementing Agencies for the GEF. Betlem is managing and further developing the project portfolio of DDT and other pesticides related projects implemented by UNEP in collaboration with other UN Agencies like the WHO.

Jorge Ocana, a Peruvian national, joined UNEP DGEF as a Task Manager for POPs in 2005.  He mainly supports the Latin American and West African countries  in developing and Implementing their National Implementation Plans on POPs.  Jorge has approximately 15 years of experience in providing technical support to chemical related programmes and projects.

Before joining DGEF Jorge worked at the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) assisting countries to develop National Strategies and Programmes for Sound Management of Chemicals, including development of National Assessments of Chemicals Management and Pollutant Release and Transfer Registers (PRTRs). 

Prior to UNITAR, Jorge worked for the Commission for Environmental Cooperation of North America in Montreal, Canada.  He worked in the Environment and Health Division, focusing on the development of a comparative report on PRTRs and the Regional Action Plan for Sound Management of Chemicals for North America.

Jorge is a biologist from Concordia University in Montreal, Canada.  He also studies in Human Medicine in Peru and Adult Education in Montreal, Canada.

Christine Wellington has approximately 15 years in the field of Environment. She began with an Environmental Science Specialist Degree (BSc, '94) from Univeristy of Toronto, with a MSc in the field from McGill University, with a focus on nutrient mass balances of Caribbean Coastal waters of Barbados, and water chemistry, with collaboration with the University of West Indies (1995-1998).

She then joined the Ministry of Environment of the Government of Barbados (1998-2001) as a Chemicals and Climate Focal point, negotiating the related Conventions and overseeing national implementation aspects. Christine began with UNEP in 2002, first overseeing GEF Methyl Bromide project execution with UNEP's Division of Technology, Industry and Economics in Paris.

She then became a Task Manager for UNEP DGEF in 2004, overseeing the entire Ozone portfolio of DTIE. She transferred to Washington DC in late 2007, broadening her focal area responsibilities to POPs projects."

Irene Kanyi has been with the UNEP- GEF since 2004 as a Finance Assistant, working in the Fund Management Unit, providing financial support to the Multi-focal Area projects as well as support the Fund Management officer on fee and corporate work for the division.

She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration (Human Resource option) and currently pursuing a Masters in Business Administration at the United States International University (Africa Campus).

Prior to joining UNEP I worked with Industrial, Manufacturing and banking sectors for four years and I was responsible for both Financial and Administrative Management.
