  • Haiti Sustainable Energy: After two years of preparation, this project – that aims to significantly improve energy access in Haiti - was launched in 2012 and is expected to become a multi-project and multi-donor initiative with a duration of up to five years. Over US$5 million in investment has already been secured for the South Department of Haiti, where UNEP is coordinating the Côte Sud Initiative. • MER Sud: Marine Environment Regeneration in the South Department. This programme aims to promote marine ecosystems regeneration and the sustainable management of marine resources while improving the fisheries market, diversifying fisheries products and developing coastal community-based eco-tourism initiatives.

Haiti’s rich coastline is home to mangrove forests, coral reefs, sandy beaches, seagrass beds and internationally protected species such as manatees, sea turtles and flamingos. The goal of MER Sud is to help rural coastal communities make the switch from poverty and unsustainable livelihoods to more economically productive and sustainable ecosystem-based livelihoods.
