The Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction is the world’s foremost gathering to reduce disaster risks, bringing together government representatives, NGOs, scientists, practitioners, and UN organizations to share experiences and accelerate implementation of the Hyogo Framework for Action (2005-2015): Building the resilience of nations and communities to disasters, the international framework for disaster risk reduction. The Global Platform for Disaster Reduction takes place every two years, with the Fourth Session set to take place on 19-23 May 2013 in Geneva, Switzerland.

As a signatory to the Hyogo Framework for Action, UNEP has remained an active collaborator and participant at the Global Platform since it was first convened in 2007, advocating for environmentally sustainable solutions to DRR. UNEP has organized high-level panel discussions, roundtables, side events, awareness-raising and learning sessions on Ecosystem-based DRR, and a marketplace booth.

At the Fourth Session in May 2013, UNEP, together with partners, will a launch the book on The Role of Ecosystems in Disaster Risk Reduction (UNU Press) followed by a panel discussion, convene a side event and a marketplace booth.
