UNEP advocates for sustainable ecosystems management as an integrated approach to disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation.

UNEP’s Ibrahim Thiaw, Director of the Division of Environmental Policy Implementation, addressed the UN General Assembly Thematic Debate on Disaster Risk Reduction, in April 2012, as a preparatory meeting leading up to the Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development.

Delivered on behalf of the Partnership for Environment and Disaster Risk Reduction (PEDRR), UNEP emphasized the importance of promoting integrated and sustainable solutions to tackle the challenges of disasters and climate change. Sustainable ecosystems management offers tried-and-tested solutions and helps bridge the gap of mainstreaming disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation into development.
