On January 31, 2013, UNEP and the World Bank held an event in Nairobi entitled “Assessing conflict risk in the exploitation and management of natural resources.” The objective of the event was to present the latest knowledge on natural resources and conflict, and to present a series of case studies on the topic. Around 40-45 people attended the event, including representatives from UNEP, the World Bank, government, NGOs, civil society, and academia. The key take-away message from this event was that the pace of exploration that is taking place in some countries is exceeding the capacity for governments to deal with, opening the door for conflict and instability.
