Database experts, trained by the project, manage the coastal and marine resources database, and provide GIS services to national and international agencies.

The Eastern African DataBase and Atlas Project (EAF/14) was initiated in 1993 by UNEP and its goal is to produce an atlas of the coastal resources of Eastern Africa, and to develop a GIS based database of the Coastal zone of Eastern Africa, including Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Comoros and Seychelles. The database covers the land-sea interaction area, approximately 50 Km of the land and 50Km of the ocean.

The major donors of the project are the Belgian goverment through its Belgian Administration for Development Cooperation (BADC) and UNEP.

Since July 1997, the Flemish Association for Development Cooperation and Technical Assistance (VVOB) supported the project through the secondment of a GIS Analyst.

The project supports one National Agency (Lead Collaborating Agency or LCA), based on their experience in Coastal Zone Management. In each of the LCA's a GIS Unit is established by providing equipment and training GIS experts. Under supervision of UNEP, each of the LCA's collects and collates information provided by other institutes, government departments, agencies and research bodies. The collected maps, quantitative and qualitative data are then digitized and entered into a GIS database.

More information concerning the project can be obtained from the project's information sheet.
