On 9 July 1998, the first coastal resources atlas, comprising of five sets of coastal resource maps and an illustrated textbook on the coastal environment of Kenya, was officially launched in Nairobi.

The launching was attended by (l to r.): Director KMFRI, Belgian Ambassador to Kenya, Representative (PS) of the Govt. of Kenya and representatives of UNEP.

The coastal resource maps and the textbook contain information on the resources of the Kenyan coastline form Somalia to Tanzania.

The maps cover a 100 Km wide area of more than 100 kilometers, that represents 50 Km water and 50 Km land.

The maps indicate areas of intense use along the coastline requiring careful management and provide an indication on likely consequences of specific decisions. Further they indicate gaps in knowledge and information, and suggest priority areas for research and investigation. The maps can also act as a guide to recreational opportunities and tourist attractions. The textbook compliments the resource maps and is expected to become a reference work for scholars and administrators
