East Africa Montane Forests Aerial Expedition (EAMFO)

The montane forests of East Africa are rugged terrains rich in fauna and flora.  Over the past seven years UNEP,  in partnership with local and regional organizations, has led the way towards conducting environmental assessments of the montane forest ecosystems in an attempt to identify potential threats and outline counter-measures to overcome them.

During the course of the expedition, aerial surveys of forests were conducted using a single-engine aircraft and a team made up of UNEP conservationist Christian Lambrechts and Kenya Wildlife Service's Senior Warden and pilot Bongo Woodley.

The value of the East Africa Montane Forests Aerial Expedition lies not only in the science and data collected, but in the positive action it stirred towards conservation
.

Bringing together local communities, decision-makers and international organizations, the expedition covered the following terrain:

Mount Kenya Forests (1999)
Mt. Kilimanjaro Forests (2001)
Aberdare Range Forests (2002)
