Partnership with UNEP

UNEP's association with Tara is an extension to its partnership with the late Sir Peter Blake and what was then the Seamaster.  Tara is bound to UNEP by a common value " …to exert common efforts for the preservation and improvement of the human environment, for the benefit of all the people and for their posterity." (Stockholm Conference, 1972)

UNEP’s sponsorship of Tara gives this unique project for the environment an international dimension and access to political decision makers.  Tara has been a fantastic tool to bear witness of the fragility of the environment, because Tara is not a "cabin cruiser" but a platform that has adapted itself to six expeditions and to the needs of the scientists and artists who came on board.

Together, UNEP and the Tara team wish to achieve the following objectives:
  • Explore and assess environmental conditions and trends.

  • Raise awareness in regards to the wise management of the environment.

  • Encourage new partnerships

  • Bring to the attention of decision makers real-life testimonies about the state of the environment.
