What is the progress of Kyoto Protocol? Is there any positive result from the CDM projects in this world? How can green project can take benifit with this protocal?
Agni Chaulagain (from Qatar)
The Kyoto Protocol is in force and accordingly Parties are expected to honor their obligations to0 reduce greenhouse gases. There are many CDM projects that are being implemented in developing countries. Since the process of qualifying is rather stringent and transparent it is expected that CDM projects have positive emission reduction impacts.

While I am not sure what you mean by green project, I hope my answer will meet your expectations. Any project that can demonstrate reductions in greenhouse gas emissions can qualify to be a CDM project. Typically transactions costs for CDM projects can be relatively high and often prohibitive if the quantity of potential emission reductions is small.

Somalia has been embroiled in conflict since the early 1990s. In the absence of central authorities to manage natural resources, many of the woodlands and rangelands have been severly degraded. There is a thriving charcoal export trade to the Middle East. (Unregulated) charcoal production is unsustainable and will further impoverish rural Somalis who are nomadic pastoralists. However many of the charcoal producers are in it due to lack of alternatives. There is now a Transitional Federal Government that is slowly taking charge. UNDP Somalia has been exploring the possibility of promoting alternative, sustainable options (e.g., wind, biodiesel, biogas, solar etc) while discouraging charcoal. Would you be in a position to assist us to develop an intervention strategy?
Samuel Gitahi (from Somalia)
Yes we would be willing to provide technical assistaince to develop such a strategy in aprtnership with UNDP and other stakeholders

What strategies do you propose for educating policy-makers in your area of specialization?
Centre for Environment Education (from India)
I would suggest developing policy guidelines based on successful case studies and then disseminating these to the policy makers through various accessible mechanisms such as policy dialogues, discussions in the media as well as through the theatre. Demonstrating a technology for example in public facilities is also a useful strategy to educate policy makers. Identifying a role model to deliver the message to policy makers on a particular issue can be an effective strategy. In addition raising awarenes of the issue among students can also be a useful strategy to educate policy makers since most of them have children. Overall it is important to use multiple strategies concurrently to ensure maximum impact.
