Takehiro Nakamura

Takehiro Nakamura, Coordinator, Marine and Coastal Ecosystems Unit, Division of Environmental Policy Implementation has since 2010 been engaged in the development and oversight of activities to support development of tools and methodologies for sustainable management and use of coastal and marine resources and ecosystem services, such as ecosystem approaches, Integrated Coastal Zone Management, blue carbon and other ecosystem specific management approaches (mangroves and coral reefs, particularly). He has been also involved in management of transboundary water systems (shared marine and coastal environment, shared river/lake basins, and shared groundwater systems) particularly through projects funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) in addressing transboundary concerns and global issues relevant to these systems.

Many of the projects are designed and implemented based on the ecosystem approach. He has also started a process of incporating the ecosystem approach in the Regional Seas programmes over which UNEP coordinates. He has been engaged in assessment of ecosystem conditions in river/lake basins for water management purposes, addressing water related emergencies, setting up institutional mechanisms for shared river basins and marine environment, among other issues, while staying in UNEP since 1992.

He has obtained the Bachelor and Master of Engineering degrees from Kyoto University in 1985 and 1987, respectively. He has obtained a Master of Science from the University of California at Berkeley in 1991, and more recently obtained a Ph.D. in Global Environmental Studies from Kyoto University in 2007 with his thesis on ecosystem approach to river basin management.
