Ron Witt
Ron Witt is the Regional Coordinator for Europe from UNEP's Division of Early Warning and Assessment (DEWA) and has served for over 20 years with the organisation. He joined UNEP and worked at the Nairobi Headquarters in January 1986 as a specialist in environmental data, geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing, following an earlier career at the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), where he worked from 1980 to 1985 as a technology transfer specialist.

Ron joined UNEP at the time the Global Resource Information Database GRID) network was first being established, and later moved to the Geneva office of UNEP and GRID where he served as Database Manager and analyst, conducting GIS and remote sensing demonstration projects and capacity building activities in these areas with trainees from developing and transitional countries.

Since mid-1995 Ron served as the manager of the GRID-Geneva (now GRID-Europe) centre and shortly after was named DEWA Regional Coordinator for the region. He established the "Partnership Agreement" with the Swiss Federal Office for Environment and the Canton/University of Geneva in 1999, a highly successful arrangement which provides core support to UNEP/DEWA.

Ron has a Master's degree in Geography and Middle Eastern studies from the University of Utah (Salt Lake City, USA), and a Bachelor's degree in European history from Middlebury College (Vermont, USA).
