Strike Mkandla
Strike Mkandla is the UNEP Representative (Senior Liaison Officer) to the African Union (AU), the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and to Ethiopia. He moved to the Regional Office for Africa (ROA) in March 2003 to run the Addis Ababa Liaison Office after serving as the Head of Technical Cooperation in the Capacity Building Branch of the UNEP Division of Environmental Policy Implementation (DEPI).

His first stint in UNEP was in the Office of the Executive Director as a consultant (Technical Researcher) in 1991. In OED he worked with the Policy Advisor to Dr. Mustafa Tolba on outreach strategies, later moving as a staff member to the Information and Public Affairs Branch where he served from 1992 to 1998, focusing on outreach to Agenda 21 Major Groups, NGOs/CSOs and National Committees. Before coming to UNEP he was Head of Information and Documentation at the UN Institute for Namibia (1985-1990), until the winding down of UNIN on the attainment of Namibian independence.

Strike did his higher education in England, having served in the liberation movement for his country's (Zimbabwe) independence. He holds a Bachelor of Arts (Humanities) from Middlesex, Msc. (Econ.) in International Relations (University College, London) and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in International Relations from the University of Kent at Canterbury. He is married, with three children.
