Janet Macharia
Janet is currently employed by the UNEP as the Senior Gender Adviser based at the UNEP headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. Prior to joining the UN in 1997, she was employed as a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Law, University of Nairobi, for a period of ten years. She has also been a visiting Law Lecturer at the Universities of Warwick, Oslo and Zimbabwe and is a member of various legal professional associations. Janet is interested in pursuing the different ways in which men and women interact with socio-regulatory systems and how these continue to define their day to day living and the impact of this on the environment. In her work in UNEP she will inter alia focus on developing different methodologies that staff (and collaborating partners/institutions) can use in mainstreaming gender into environment management programmes.

Janet is a lawyer by profession and holds a PhD in Law from the University of Warwick and Master of Laws from Columbia University. Her career spanns academia, non-governmental organisations, and international development organisations and she has over 15 years experience in research, training, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of rights based programmes.

She has extensively published books and articles in referred journals in various areas with a particular focus on gender issues, children's rights, women's human rights, law and development, and, environmental law.
