Experts' profiles - Joan Fabres
Joan Fabres
Joan Fabres has served as Programme Coordinator of the UNEP Shelf Programme at GRID-Arendal, one of UNEPs Centres of Excellence located in Norway, since December 2006.

The UNEP Shelf Programme was established in 2004 in response to a resolution from the 57th UN General Assembly that asked UNEP to use the GRID system to store and handle research data from the outer continental margin that would be relevant for Developing States and Small Island Developing States working in the definition of the outer limits of the continental shelf. Alongside with the data compilation and facilitation undertaken by GRID-Arendal, an active training and advisory programme was also developed.

A team of marine experts at GRID-Arendal are working to expand the scope of work with developing states towards a broader programme focussing on the assessment and sustainable management of deep seafloor environment and resources, and on public awareness regarding the impact of climate change to oceans and coasts.

Joan has a PhD Degree in Geological Sciences with specialization in Marine Sciences from the University of Barcelona, Spain. During his doctoral and postdoctoral studies in Barcelona and Stony Brook University, he devoted his research efforts to investigate the sedimentary processes in continental margins and their implications in carbon sequestration and the carbon cycle in the ocean.
