Ximena Prugue is the winner of the WED blogging competition, organized by UNEP and TreHugger.com

As unique as the spelling of her name, Ximena Prugue is a 20-year-old mechanical engineering student from Miami, Florida. As an engineer, Ximena aspires to design products that can be implemented in developing countries to help solve or alleviate some of the world's greatest social problems. Ximena was born and raised in Miami to Peruvian parents and an older brother to whom she shared her affinity for science after years of watching Bill Nye the Science Guy together.

An advocate of renewable energy, in 2009 she started Giving the Green Light, a non-profit organization that works towards replacing kerosene lamps in rural India with solar-powered lights while raising awareness about energy poverty in local schools.

She is also an active member of Emerge Miami, a Miami pro-bike group that works towards creating a bike-friendly Miami by organizing rides, workshops, and other events. Her hobbies include reading, photographing her five dogs, dancing by herself in her room, and attempting to cook.
