Khairoon Abbas
Many young people are well aware of some of the environmental challenges facing the world, like climate change, but they often ask, what can they do to make a difference? Addressing environmental challenges such as these can start with you, by adopting sustainable lifestyles: that's the message Khairoon Abbas shares with young people as part of the UNEP/UNESCO YouthXchange (YXC) Initiative.

In her work as a consultant at UNEP, Khairoon promotes the use of the YXC training kit for sustainable lifestyles that shows young people how daily actions through the consumption choices we make (e.g. food, shopping, leisure activities, transport etc) have direct and indirect implications for our environment. Created for young people aged 15-24 and educators working with youth and translated into more than 20 languages, the training kit explains sustainable consumption in an engaging manner using simple language, supported by facts, graphics, images and case studies from around the world.

Prior to joining UNEP, Khairoon worked as a journalist in Africa, and participated in a project, which sent across nine African countries, from Cairo to Cape Town, by car. This experience grounded her knowledge in what sustainable lifestyles are all about ranging from eating local food and conserving energy to saving water and car-sharing. Khairoon is originally from Tanzania and holds a Bachelor's degree degree in communications and a Master's degree in journalism, both from Carleton University in Canada. Khairoon enjoys traveling, learning about new cultures, tasting traditional cuisine and most of all, interacting with enthusiastic young people who are eager to make a difference in their societies by helping create a more sustainable future for generations to come.
