Experts' profiles - Jean-Jacob Sahou
Jean-Jacob Sahou
Jean Jacob Sahou is from Bénin and works for the Poverty and Environment Initiative (PEI) programme. The programme assists countries to better integrate pro-poor environmentally sustainable natural resource use into national development planning processes. To this purpose, PEI provides financial and technical assistance to governments to achieve the more sustainable management of natural resources on the basis that such resources generate economic and social benefits for people. Consequently, unsustainable use reduces the economic benefits generated and can make it more difficult to reduce poverty. One of the key tools used to implement such a country-led approach aiming to increase countries ownership is economic instruments.

Economic instruments signal the costs and benefits of sustainable management of natural resources including the extent to which the latter are contributing to poverty alleviation and other development objectives at country level.

Experience with PEI has shown that economic instruments can be powerful tools for which decision makers at country level are showing increasing interest (owing to PEI support) as such instruments can help signal the monetary value of loss of well-being and production due to environmental degradation and therefore can help identify the priority areas where policy action is highly required.

Jean Jacob Sahou is a regional programme advisor within the PEI Africa team based in Nairobi. He mainly provides overall strategic guidance to PEI country teams and ensures that PEI work plans are well focused on influencing national development planning processes.

Before he joined PEI in 2008, he was in charge of the Energy and Environment portfolio within Benin UNDP country office. He holds an agricultural economics degree from Université Nationale du Bénin, a Master in Integrated Rural Development approach from Laval University (Quebec-Canada) and a PhD in Botany and Plants Ecology from University of Lomé (Togo).
