Francesco Saverio Civili
Francesco Saverio Civili, Italian national, studied at the University La Sapienza of Rome, Italy, where he obtained a doctor degree in marine biology. He continued his studies at the University of Geneva, Switzerland, where he followed a post-doctorate course in Applied Chemistry related to water pollution control.

After a period of research work at the Biological Oceanography department of the University of Rome, he joined the newly born Regional Seas Programme of the United Nations Environment Programme in Geneva to work, as a scientist, on the launching of the MED POL Programme (the Mediterranean pollution assessment and control programme of the Mediterranean Action Plan) in the framework of the Barcelona Convention.

With the establishment of the Coordinating Unit for the Mediterranean Action Plan in Athens, Greece, he became gradually responsible for the management of the MED POL programme and in particular for the formulation and follow up of national marine pollution monitoring and control programmes. He became Coordinator of the MED POL programme in 1998. As a result of the work of MED POL, all Mediterranean countries have prepared and are now implementing National Action Plans aiming at a gradual reduction of municipal and industrial pollution around the coastline.
