Marcel van Nijnatten
Marcel van Nijnatten has studied International Economics at the University of Maastricht and holds a masters degree in English Literature from the University of Utrecht.

He has worked for the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality in various international functions. Among other things he participated in the negotiations for the accession of Eastern European countries to the European Union (EU), and held several workshops on EU legislation in Eastern Europe. Upon completion of the negotiations, he switched to agricultural commodity trade and was a member of the Dutch delegation to the UN Commission on Sustainable Development for several years.

In 2006 Marcel started working for CITES to prepare the 14th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties. The Conference took place in June 2007 in The Hague. He is now responsible for fund-raising and the start-up of an African Elephant Fund.

The balance between trade in species, their survival in the wild, and the position of CITES in this field will be the topic of discussion for this session.
