Juan Carlos Vasquez
Juan Carlos Vasquez works in the Legal Affairs and Trade Policy Unit of the CITES Secretariat - UNEP. He has been working to assist Parties to CITES for the past 10 years in developing 'trade and environment' policies for CITES and in drafting national CITES legislation, for instance providing technical advice, models of law, examples of existing legislation. He is also the Secretariat's spokesperson and press officer, and is responsible for providing information on the Convention, particularly to the trade community. Juan Carlos also serves as one of the Regional Assistants Central, South America and the Caribbean.

Before joining CITES, he worked as a legal adviser for the Ministry of Agriculture of Colombia (Fondo DRI) and as an environmental lawyer of a Public Interest Foundation (Fundepublico).

He received a law degree in 1992 from Universidad Nacional de Colombia, earned a Master's degree in Public Management and Environmental Economics from the University of Geneva in 1998, and is Candidate to a PhD on international environmental law from the school of law of the University of Geneva (ongoing).

Juan Carlos was born on 22 May (Biodiversity Day) 1970 in Fusagasuga, Colombia, and is married with two children. He believes in innovation, collective efforts and constructive approaches to tackle environmental challenges. He loves theatre, salsa dancing and plays the sax from time to time.

He is fluent in Spanish (mother tongue), French and English.
