Surya Prakash Chandak is the Deputy Director and Officer-in-Charge of the International Environmental Technology Centre (IETC) of the UNEP Division of Technology, Industry and Economics (DTIE). He has developed IETC’s programme on Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM). Under the programme several ISWM projects have been done at Wuxi New District in People’s Republic of China, Pune in India, Maseru in Lesotho, and Matale in Sri Lanka. Also he has led the development of methodology of Sustainability Assessment of Technologies. He is leading IETC’s work on waste management which includes, apart from ISWM, plastic waste management, waste agricultural bio-mass, e-waste, etc.
He joined UNEP in 2000 as the Head of Implementation Unit, Production and Consumption Branch in DTIE. Before joining UNEP, he was the Director of National Cleaner Production Centre in India after serving as the Director of Environment Division in the National Productivity Council in India. He has over 20 years of experience in consulting and training during which provided advisory services to over 500 industries and 50 national/local governments on wide range of energy and environment related issues. He has worked as International Expert in Vietnam, Sri Lanka and Nepal for demonstrating Cleaner Production, training and building local capacity, also in the Philippines, Mongolia, Iran and Thailand for promoting Green Productivity. He has also served as Senior Expert to several international organizations such as World Bank, Asian Development Bank, Asian Productivity Organization, UNIDO, ESCAP, etc. He has extensive experience on training and capacity building in thematic areas of Cleaner Production, Industrial Energy Efficiency, Industrial Air Pollution Control, etc.
He holds Bachelors degrees in Science and Engineering (chemical) and a Post Graduate diploma in fuel efficiency from Training Institute of Productivity & Industrial Engineering. He also completed Advanced Course for Managers in Energy at Instituto per la Recostruzione Industriale in Italy.
